With the defaults of Product A at 4.99 for 500 units and Product B at 8.49 for 1,000 units, unit price A = 4.99 ÷ 500 = 0.0100 and unit price B = 8.49 ÷ 1,000 = 0.0085 — Product B is cheaper per unit even though its total price is higher.

Unit price = price ÷ quantity. The lower unit price is the better per-unit deal, regardless of which product costs more in total or comes in a bigger package.

Packaging sizes vary between brands and store formats, so the product with the lower sticker price isn't always the better deal, and the larger package isn't always cheaper per unit either — bulk pricing sometimes works the other way, especially for private-label versus name-brand items. Unit price strips out package size so you're comparing the actual cost of the product itself.

This compares exactly two products using whatever price and quantity you enter — it doesn't know about sales tax, loyalty discounts, or promotions that apply at checkout, and it trusts the unit you use for quantity, so comparing a product measured in grams against one measured in milliliters will produce a meaningless result even though the calculator will still show a number.
