What this calculator does
Divides your total time by the distance you enter to show your pace (minutes and seconds per kilometer or mile) and your average speed, based on a distance and a finish time you provide.
How to use it
Enter a distance, choose whether that distance is in kilometers or miles, and enter your finish time as hours, minutes and seconds. Results update immediately as you change any field.
Worked example
With the defaults of 5 km and a finish time of 0:25:00 (25 minutes), total time is 1,500 seconds. Pace = 1,500 ÷ 5 = 300 seconds per km, shown as 5:00/km, and speed = 5 ÷ (1,500 ÷ 3,600) = 12.00 km/h.
Formula
Pace (seconds per unit) = total time in seconds ÷ distance. Speed = distance ÷ (total time in seconds ÷ 3,600), giving distance units per hour. The two are reciprocals of each other, expressed on different scales — pace as time per unit distance, speed as distance per unit time.
The unit selector
The km/mi selector only changes the label shown next to your results — it does not convert the distance value you entered. If you switch from km to mi, re-enter the distance in miles rather than expecting the existing number to be converted for you.
Limitations
This calculates an average pace and speed over the whole distance — it doesn't account for elevation change, splits, negative or positive splits within a run, or pacing strategy. For interval training or lap-by-lap analysis, you'll need a tool that tracks segments rather than a single overall distance and time.
Scope, sources and privacy
Pace = time ÷ distance and speed = distance ÷ time are the standard definitions used across running, cycling and endurance sport training. The calculation runs entirely in your browser; the values you enter are never uploaded.
Frequently Asked Questions
